Playground Reopened On Saturday, June 23, The Hermitage Foundation Museum Playground reopened with new equipment, walking paths, and picnic tables. Opening remarks were made by: Darrell R. Crittendon, Director of Recreation, Parks and Open Space, Councilman Barclay C. Winn, Ward 6, William S. Hull, Past President - Board of Trustees, Hermitage Foundation Museum and Gardens, and Christopher Doyle, Past President of the Lochhaven Civic League. Reverend Robert Davenport of The Church of the Good Shepard delivered the invocation. The real fun began once the ribbon was cut; kids, cake, and smiles abounded making the ceremony truly momentous. The original playground was filled with equipment first introduced in 1957 with some additions made fifteen years ago. Last year the park was closed due to safety issues cited by the Museum’s insurers. Thanks to the City of Norfolk and the Lochhaven Civic League working together with the Hermitage Foundation, a new and much improved playground welcomes guests from sunrise to sunset each day. The improvements and renovations that were done to the play area include: the installation of four tot swings, four belt swings, playground equipment for children ages 5-12, a walking path that loops around the new play area, and a painted concrete surface for games such as Hopscotch and Four-square. Visitors to the playground are invited to park each day till 5:00 pm in the Museum’s main parking lot by the historic house. A shaded walking path on the west side of the lawn provides a meandering paved walkway leading back to the playground. Parking in the Visual Arts School lot will be dependent on spaces available since this lot is reserved for participants in classes, camps, and the studio artists program. If you have any concerns regarding the new playground, please contact the City at (757) 441-5156.
