Norfolk's Urban Forest
The importance of our urban forests cannot be overestimated. Each solitary tree has a profound role in our environment's health: air filtering, water run-off prevention, climate control. And for those of us who live our lives among them, we have the pleasure of shade, rustle of leaves, scented blossoms and blankets of color covering the ground to pleasure our senses. Their job, however, is not what catches the attention of my eye.
It is, instead, the iconic power trees have always possessed that excites me. When I travel to distant lands, I'm always drawn to photograph this power trees create in a landscape. They comfort or inspire. They conjure up fear or suggest the complexity of age. They also symbolize a land, its people and their stewardship of the specific piece of earth they occupy.
Norfolk's Urban Forest provides similar soothing and unsettling views in its individual trees. Focusing on the complex urban settings in my own city brings the excitement of travel and discovery. This forest attests to the mysterious beauty of the commonplace.
