EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES


Art Instructors ~ The Hermitage Foundation Museum Visual Arts School (VAS) is inviting community artists to submit proposals to teach workshops and 9-week class sessions on a variety of art subjects at the VAS located next to the Hermitage Foundation Museum at 7701 North Shore Road in Norfolk, Virginia. The VAS will accept and consider proposals for classes and/or workshops geared toward adults and children. Artists are not limited in their proposals; the VAS is equipped with a full darkroom, multi-media room, and ceramics studio with five Brent pottery wheels.

All submissions should include the following information:
• applicant’s name, address, and telephone number (e-mail address if available)
• title and description of the workshop, class, or camp
• supply list and approximate cost of supplies
• resume including previous teaching experience
• preferred dates and times of session

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES


There are many opportunities to make a difference! You can donate your time and talents to the Hermitage in many different ways. Presently, Volunteers are needed in the following areas: Collections, Promotions, Special Events, Gardens & Grounds, and our Visual Arts School. Of course if you have another talent that we haven't listed, we are always open to new ideas.

Volunteer Docent ~ This volunteer position works a regular schedule under the direction of the Tours and Events Manager and closely with the Volunteer Coordinator.  Docents will begin as front-desk staff/greeters and, after a ninety-day educational period, may have the opportunity to transition into providing organized, interpretative tours of, facilities, and the Sloane Collection as it pertains to the Sloane family and Foundation history.  Docents will work closely with part-time Tour Guides and together serve The Hermitage Foundation members, guests, and visitors with organized interpretive tours of exhibitions.  The qualified candidate possess an interest in and passion for learning and teaching, specifically in Art and History, the ability to communicate accurately and effectively, and is dedicated, dependable, and self-motivated with an ability to work as part of a team. Other duties include: general reception duties, computer research and data entry, and cash register operation.  Docents may also work within various Foundation departments to assist with educational programs, events, exhibitions and facility maintenance as required.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Hermitage Foundation offers non-paid internships throughout the year to
responsible and enthusiastic students interested in a possible career in the Museum, Historic House, History, Library, Art Education, Museum Gallery, Gardens and Grounds, Landscape Design, or Horticulture fields. The following departments are currently accepting applications for internships:

Curatorial Intern/Art History/Archives ~
This internship position maintains a flexible schedule under the direction of the Curator of Collections. Hands on training for responsible student interested in learning more about a career in the Museum, Art, Library or Art History field.  Responsibilities may include entering historic accession records into museum computer data base, inventorying, conservation, grant writing, educational programming, art history research, exhibition designing, and everyday curatorial duties.   The qualified candidate possesses very strong organizational abilities, is familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite, and can work independently.

Assistant Registrar for Digital Images ~ This internship position maintains a flexible schedule under the direction of the Curator of Collections and Marketing Coordinator.  The Assistant Registrar for Digital Images will electronically categorize, name, and organize images of grounds, facilities, and collection items for use by all departments.  The qualified candidate possesses very strong organizational abilities, is familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite, and can work independently.  After completion of the initial project, and with requisite ability and training, other organizational duties may be assigned within the Curatorial Department.

Gardens & Grounds/Horticulture ~ The Hermitage Foundation is a twelve acre estate within the city limits of Norfolk that is home to a Historic House Museum and several gardens.  The Hermitage Foundation offers non-paid internships throughout the year to responsible and enthusiastic students interested in a possible career in the Gardens and Grounds or Horticulture field.  Intern will work directly with the Curator of Gardens.  This internship will include physical labor and requires some heavy lifting.

Art Education/Museum Gallery/Public Programs ~ This internship position maintains a flexible schedule under the direction of the Public Programs Manager. Hands on training for responsible student interested in learning more about a career in the Museum Gallery, Art Education, or Marketing field.  Responsibilities may include assisting with media relations, marketing, all stages of exhibition gallery planning/execution, Visual Art School planning and administration, and special events.   The qualified candidate possesses very strong organizational abilities, graphics experience, and can work independently.
