Position: Curator of Collections
Department: Curatorial

Hermitage Museum & Gardens, Norfolk, Virginia seeks creative and innovative Curator of Collections. The Museum houses an eclectic collection of art which spans 5,000 year.  The collection includes antiquities, twentieth-century paintings and sculptures, European and American masterworks, Asian art, and works on paper (drawings, prints, and photographs). Key areas of oversight include exhibition development and implementation, collection care and management, donor and collector relations, and the development of special curatorial projects. Reporting to the Director, the Curator is a member of the leadership team and works collaboratively with department heads. The Curator will provide expertise with respect to museum issues and the visual arts within the museum and will represent the museum to external constituencies. Curator trains docent core of volunteers.

Master’s Degree in Museum Studies, Art History, or related field required. Familiarity with PastPerfect database is required. The Curator will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be meticulous, highly organized and conscientious. This individual will possess strong administrative and management skills. Must be a self-starter and work with limited supervision. Knowledge of twentieth century architecture and interior design helpful. General carpentry skills are valuable.

Position: Public Programs Coordinator
Department: Public Programs
Position Supervisor: Public Programs Manager

The Public Programs Department of the Hermitage Museum & Gardens seeks an individual to work part-time (25 hours per week including Saturdays).  This staff person will work closely with the Public Programs Manager to give general support to the Visual Arts School, summer camp program, exhibitions and school tours. Duties will include monitoring of classroom facilities and ordering class supplies, preparations for the Summer Camp program, assistance with the School Tours Program, and general exhibition preparation for six exhibitions a year.

This position requires a person who enjoys working with people including children. The Public Programs Coordinator is a “can-do” individual.  Computer skills, strong writing abilities and using simple hand tools are essential skills to conduct the duties of this position.

Position: Art Instructors
Department: Public Programs
Position Supervisor: Public Programs Manager

The Hermitage Visual Arts School (VAS) is inviting community artists to submit proposals to teach workshops and 9-week class sessions on a variety of art subjects at the VAS located next to the Hermitage Foundation Museum at 7701 North Shore Road in Norfolk, Virginia. The VAS will accept and consider proposals for classes and/or workshops geared toward adults and children. Artists are not limited in their proposals; the VAS is equipped with a full darkroom, multi-media room, and ceramics studio with seven Brent pottery wheels.

• supply list and approximate cost of supplies

We have many opportunities available in the areas of Tours and Events, Curatorial Sciences, Marketing, Public Programming, and in the Gardens. All we need is you.

There are many opportunities to make a difference! You can donate your time and talents to the Hermitage in many different ways. Presently, Volunteers are needed in the following areas: Collections, Promotions, Special Events, Gardens & Grounds, and our Visual Arts School. Of course if you have another talent that we haven't listed, we are always open to new ideas.

While the Hermitage welcomes volunteers to fill all positions, the need for Museum and Garden Docents is highest at this time.

How do I become a docent?

Anyone can become a docent. There are no educational prerequisites, just an interest in and passion for the arts and a desire to share these with the public. Community members wishing to become docents must complete the Core’s Docent Training Program.

Internship Opportunities

The Hermitage offers internships throughout the year in several exciting areas. Currently, the following departments are accepting applications for internships:

The Hermitage Museum Internship is an unpaid, volunteer position. Students are responsible for contacting their respective school for all academic and funding requirements. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, having completed two years of high school to apply, although internships are generally awarded to college and graduate students.
