Sushi Making in the Historic Hermitage Kitchen

Join us in the charming Hermitage Kitchen and learn how to make your own sushi. Japanese food expert, Andrew Meredith, will lead you through each step from how to slice the fish and vegetables, flavor the rice, and roll the sushi. Follow up your hard work with a scrumptious snack!
$20 for members* + $15 materials fee

Japanese Kite Making Children’s Workshop
Instructed by: Kate Gebler
Ages: 6 - 12 years old
Saturday, February 13, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Let’s go fly a kite! Get ready for the warm weather by making your own Japanese style kite. We will begin by creating your own design for the kite and block printing paper. Then build the frame with dowels. Enjoy your creation by flying the kite on the beautiful grounds!

Japanese Sume-I Painting for Beginners
Instructed by: Su-Ying Lam
Sunday, February 7, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Join accomplished Sume-I painter Su Ying Lam for an afternoon of painting in this traditional Japanese style using fine bamboo brushes, ink, watercolor, and rice paper. Finish with a beginner’s masterpiece ready to frame.

Raku Kiln Firing
Instructed by: Pamela Lassiter
Saturday, February 20, starting at 11:00 a.m.
Experienced potters take this chance to get new results with the Raku firing method. Pieces need to be made with Raku clay and be no larger than 10 inches. Each student should come with three pieces already bisque fired. Please call for further information regarding glazing.

Exhibition Lecture
The Art of Kazuko Mukoyama
Lecture presentation by Professor Agnieszka Whelan
Saturday, February 13, 2:00 p.m., Central Hall of Museum
Professor Agnieszka Whelan of the Old Dominion University Department of Art and Institute of Asian Studies will present the intriguing evolution of the art of Kazuko Mukoyama. Professor Whelan will enlighten guests with an overview of contemporary and traditional Japanese art and how these motifs are represented in the body of work on display in the Hermitage Galleries. Space is limited. Reservations are required.
