Intro to Darkroom Photography (8 weeks) Instructed by Lynn Allred

Learn the basics of black and white photography including film and camera handling, composition, lighting, filters, negative development and printing. Be inspired by the exploration of a unique art medium and take the first step to becoming a photographic artist. Perfect for the beginner student or for those with a general knowledge of darkroom developing.

Advanced Photo/Open Lab (8 weeks) Instructed by Lynn Allred
January 18 – March 8
Thursdays, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. (VAS I)
Examine the art of developing through a more intimate approach to the darkroom. Advanced Photo explores toning, negative prints, hand-coloring, infra-red and other artistic techniques. Prior experience required. Looking for a darkroom? Open Lab gives you time in the darkroom to work independently or collaboratively. Join a supportive and creative group of artists and share your ideas and inspiration.

Silk Painting (6 weeks) Instructed by Lee Gerry Wertheimer

Explore the elegant art of painting on silk using traditional as well as contemporary painting and dying methods. Techniques will include developing a motif, using Gupta resist, block printing on East Indian fabric, and painting in the one-stroke Chinese style with bamboo brushes. Take home gorgeous scarves and/or silk paintings to hang on your wall.

Study line, shape, shading, and perspective in this introduction to drawing techniques and materials. Be inspired by Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, let go of inhibitions, and create simple to complex compositions in charcoal, pencil, and pastel.

Student Art Portfolio-Building (8 weeks) Instructed by Emily Slapin

Geared toward high school juniors and seniors, this class helps students develop solid art portfolios to accompany applications to art schools or college art programs. In addition to art-making within the class, students will learn what colleges are looking for in portfolios, how to photograph works and construct a slide portfolio, and how to make the best presentation of skills and interests.

Recycle a book into a creative work of art! In this innovative class, manipulate a book or books by rebinding, cutting, tearing, painting, drawing, adding collage, gold-leafing, stamping, printing, adorning, and personalizing with poetry or portraiture. Never taken a pottery class before? Learn the basics of centering on the wheel and throw open forms in the Japanese tradition. Make bowls, cups, vases and other forms to decorate. This class is open to beginner- through intermediate-level students.

Functional Pottery (8 weeks) Instructed by Jim Chalkley

Beginners through advanced potters will enjoy throwing bowls, cups, plates, jars, mugs, and covered containers. Experiment with glazing and firing and fill your cupboards with beautiful hand-thrown pieces.

Intermediate/Advanced Clay (8 weeks) Instructed by Kristin Law

Keep in stride with Intermediate Pottery, expanding your knowledge of wheel-throwing, glazing, and design. This class is also open to those who prefer sculpting forms or vessels by hand. Weekly inspiration keeps your art fresh and exciting. Some clay experience required; must be prone to potlucks and fun.

Printing on Clay (8 weeks) Instructed by John Baxter
January 20 – March 10
Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (VAS III)
Printing on Clay explores various ways of transferring images to the surface of clay. Add decorative patterns to thrown pieces, print photographs on slabs, incorporate text or imagery into your pieces. This class will look at different techniques of combining photography, printmaking, and ceramics to create multi-faceted works of clay art.
