The mission of the Hermitage Museum & Gardens is to stimulate the appreciation of art and the environment.
House Tours:
Guided tours of the Museum and Sloane Collection are conducted daily by our knowledgeable docent staff. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and include fifteen galleries filled with the Sloane family art collection, furniture and history.
Tours begin promptly on the hour with the last tour beginning at 4:00 p.m.
House Tour Admission:
Museum Members, No Admission Fee with current Membership Card
Adults, $5.00
College Students (with ID), $3.00
Ages 6-18, $2.00
Children Under 6, No Admission Fee
Active Duty Military Service Personnel, No Admission Fee
Admission includes access to Current Gallery Exhibitions.
No photographs may be taken inside the Museum.
Group Tours:
For parties of 8 or more people and are by reservation only: Call or email Tours & Events Manager at 757.423.2052 x 300 for information. Upstairs galleries are open to the public Free of Charge every Tuesday. Admission fees for the House Tour still apply.
The House that Jack Built Tour:
The House that Jack Built is a combination lecture and tour of the museum and some of the ancillary buildings on the twelve-acre site. It will explore how the Hermitage expanded and morphed from a five-room vacation home into the forty-two room structure it is today. The tour is lead by Melanie Mathewes, Executive Director, and is offered the first Saturday of the month.
The program is limited to ten participants. Reservations are required and walkups are not accepted. Reservations will be taken until 5:00 p.m. the Wednesday before the scheduled tour. The cost for The House that Jack Built is $40 for non-members and $25 for members.
Through the Garden Gate (Garden Tour):
Through the Garden Gate is a walking tour of the gardens led by Yolima Carr, Curator of Gardens & Grounds. This tour will introduce you to our site’s garden history and many varieties of plants that have a home at The Hermitage. The cost for Through the Garden Gate is $6 for non-members and $4 for members.
June 1 through August 31, Second and Fourth Saturday

Gift Shop
The Hermitage Foundation Gift Shop, The Vault, is a showcase for items from both nationally acclaimed designers as well as local artisans. Items available are inspired by the eclecticism of the Sloane Collection. The family's love of nature has encouraged a selection of ornamental and functional garden ornament. Pottery by local artists and potters from Seagrove, North Carolina are also available. Hermitage Foundation Museum and Gardens members enjoy a 10% discount on all purchases. Photography
The Hermitage Gardens and Grounds are a wonderful place to have your wedding, graduation and family photographs taken. In order to accommodate everyone and provide the best experience possible, all professional photography sessions require a reservation and must be scheduled through Tours & Events Manager at 757.423.2052 x 300. Photography sessions on the grounds are permitted Thursday through Monday from 9am-5pm only. Sessions are not permitted after-hours or on Tuesday or Wednesday. Research
The Hermitage Museum & Gardens has extensive collections, documents, records, maps, and photographs pertaining to Norfolk and the Tidewater area, the Sloane family, and art and artists related to the Sloane Collection which may be used to conduct personal, educational and professional research. It is the Museum's policy to allow public access to this valuable historical material while protecting that material and providing staff assistance to students. All research is limited to educational and personal research and not for duplication, publication, broadcast or transmission of any kind. Publication is limited to those of the scholarly type. Students are asked to fill out a Research Request Form. There is no fee for filling out a request form.
